I read Pounder and Merrill's Lost Luster. I read with interest about rebundling the principal's job and developing strong pools of admins. I particularly find it amazing that districts are offering full-paid sabbaticals for those pursuing an administrative certificate. What a powerful message that sends to people about how these districts value good leaders. Kudos to them. I can attest to the fact that many assistant principals are not given job responsibilities that adequately prepare them for the role as head principal. They are often given a specific, specialized set of tasks and - if they are good at them - continue performing these tasks until they leave the position or downsizing that forces additional responsibilities occurs. Do you find this valuable?

I read Pounder and Merrill last week, but I am again behind in posting. It is interesting that there is so much evidence that the high school administrative positions are overburdened with innumerable demands that exceed the physcial and time resources of the administrators, yet the solution(s) seems beyond our grasp. P&M's discussion of delegating responsibilities is a no brainer, but the tasks are still multiplying faster than my staff (besides, many of the extracurricular activities require more than one administrator). I agree w/P&M that more needs to be done to develop new leaders. Often times our assistant principals receive a limited amount of training beyond what is provided by the principal's academy and the building level principal. More attention needs to be paid to developing their leadership potential. Do you find this valuable?
