Hi guys, I'm just getting started but will do my best to catch up. I'm at Ripley High School and I think it's pretty obvious why I chose "personal and workplace productivity" as a focus area. Look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Agood article for rooky and verteran administrators. Everyone has found some way to create time for themselves throughout the day or what they feel has helped them be successful in their school. I feel the key and priority is the communnuty. As you are making these changes in the school to meet the students need, you must also make changes in the very community thast sends you these students evey day.
Communities become incrusted with beliefs and ways that may be detramental to what you and the school are trying to do. It seems that today we are concentrating on test scores because of NCLB. We are offering tutoring before and after school. Changes in student schedules to give double doses in their deficent areas. Peer tutoring. Counselng through both in-school and outside agencies. Evening school, Alternative school, and a hundred other differeent ways to help meet the needs of the student. But what about the community? Where are we meeeting these needs to help in these changes. So often your resistance comes form homes where the parent(s) were not successful in school. There has been a bitter taste left in their mouth from their experiences. Or there is no support what-so-ever for that student when they go home. this is an area that needs the most help. Schools and communities have to work together to help with the change in education. Doors need to be open at night so that parents and students have an opportunity to come and work together. Once tha trust is established between the school and community then, and only then -will significant gains be observed. Parents will welcome and support what you are doing for their child. Parents will see that the student is able to attend during these times so their child can be successful. Phone calls to home will be welcomed. This has to be a priority set by the school. It is the cornerstone for school success. It is an area that I feel I need to improve. |

THis article touches base on the cocept of what leaders need to move their school toward change. I always try to make decissions that are in the best interest for the student and school. We have so many factors to consider, but the student is the common denominator that is found in everequation.
Always be informative to your staff and community. This year I started a distribution list with parents to help keep them informed. Mailing is so exspensive and sending newsletters home through higgh school students is cause for a janitorial mutiny. This has worked out great. I receive several emails a day from parents asking to be placed on the distribution list. This has happened through word of mouth from other parents. Probly the hardest concept again is ditribution of leadership. At this time I have only a few whom are willing to accept more. Older staff equals "I put my time in let someone else do it." We need to realize that we are in a flux of constant change. We must be willing to change and adapt or will will not evolve. Everyone needs to be a part of the change. Everyone needs to lookat each child as if they are their own. Everyone needs to want and do whats best for each child. It was the second time watching Mr. Hollands Opus with my daughter that I realized that this is the type of teacher I expect for my child. The love, passion, hope and care that he showed each child that he encountered. THis ios the type of person I strive to be. Do I make mistakes? Everyday. But I always try to aire on the students side. |

All three articles touched base with concerns to time. Something that we have little of. I hope that I can become willing to delegate more- which should free up some time to exam the curriculum changes that need to be brought about for student success. I know that invoviing staff in the decision making will create a feeling of worthand committment to the orginization. As a true leader-you realize that everyone has somethng to0 offer, no matter how minuyte it may seem. Compliment people for going above and beyond. Build a scaffold to help others be successful. Everyone want to belong to something. The saying" It takes an entire village to raise a child" is true for the school. Everyone working together toward one common goal for each child we touch can help that child succeed in life.

I rate the article a 5.I would love to delegate more to my administration and staff. The problem is that you are hit witth your deadlines to get the job done and there is no room to be late. Also teachersdo not want to do more, they think theyare doing to much know. The teachers that are doing more keep getting more and more added to their plate. I have five assistant princialps and all have specific houses and responsibilities. But I am constantly checking on their progress dealing with certain areas. 5x5 would be one of these. They complain constantly that they just don't have time to complete the tasks at hand. We do devide up athletics so no one is overwhelmed with coverage. Again what about our time after the 8 hour shift. Families and children are put on hold as you try to advance your career. Board offices feel tha tyou are a salarie dpersdon and you should not be compensated for the time ahfter 40 hours a week. But every business that I know compensate the employees for working over 40 hours a week. Dont get me wrong I love my job and the challenges that I face day to day. I just don't know how long I can keep up this pace. We try to involve the staff by having committees for them to serve on. But some times I feel they are a waste because there are a few individuals who do not care to participate. This lack of involvement is like a spreading cancer to the rest of the staff. I let the staff know at the beginning of the year that this is not my school, its theirs. All involved need to be doing the same thing so that students learn quickly the expectations expected of them.

Tammy Wells here (Principal/ Valley High School/ Wetzel Co.). I signed up for this course to keep up with the tech skills of my students and my own kids and to assist my faculty to become more efficient (and proficient, I guess:-).
While not a wiki, myspace.com has presented some problems for my students and faculty alike. The kids are not mature enough to understand the lifelong consequences of posting personal items on a worldwide billboard and the adults in charge of them (parents and educators alike) are at a crossroads. It appears the Internet has brought with it not only efficiency but a whole new set of ethic dilemnas. Tammy

I am Carolyn Wilcox. I am Principal of Mullens Elementary School (K-4 school) in Wyoming County. I am sure you High School Principals are wondering what an elementary person is
doing in your group. Well, I am also a business owner and am very concerned about the work ethics and responsiblility of our young people today. So I want to see what I could do to help foster a sense of responsibility and develop better work ethics in our students.
